The Grassmarket Project, an Innovative Social Enterprise supporting Edinburgh's local Community

Here at The Scottish Design Exchange our mission is to not only look at how we can rejuvenate and breath life into our local High Streets, but to also have a strong focus on collaboration and community support. We work with a variety of fellow Social Enterprises that work hard to support their local communities and put people at the heart of their business. One of those is Edinburgh based, The Grassmarket Community Project.

At The Grassmarket Project you can find support and a place of sanctuary for anyone dealing with multiple complex issues. These can vary from helping people who are homeless, dealing with mental/physical health issues, learning difficulties, poverty, substance misuse, physical abuse and more.

"We believe in a world where people reach their full potential, feel positive about themselves, valued and connected to others and the wider community."

Their innovative approach offers people a dynamic range of free activities, mentoring, education and support in a nurturing environment for those furthest from mainstream education and employment opportunities. People develop skills and confidence to re-connect with themselves and their community and this leads to further opportunities such as volunteering, training or employment at the Project and elsewhere.

The Grassmarket Project also operate an 'Open Door Meals' where they help feed the homeless using a 'pay it forward' scheme where for £5 you can help buy a meal for someone in need.

The Grassmarket Project was recently visited by Prince William and he admired both of their social enterprises, Tartan and Woodwork, and also went away with some lovely gifts for himself and for the Duchess of Cambridge and their kiddies.

Opposite: Scotland's very own First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon sports one of the Grassmarket Projects Tartan face masks.

You too can sport one as they are available to purchase at our George Street shop location.

How does SDX help support The Grassmarket Project? We offer a free space for several of the Activity groups within the community to sell the fabulous products they make. All the profits from these sales go directly to the Project in supporting disadvantaged people in Edinburgh. You can find a selection of goods from the ,Tartan/Textiles & Candles Group and the ,Furniture/Woodwork Group's at our George Street shop in Edinburgh.

"We are very grateful to have the opportunity to show our work in a prime location in Edinburgh, reaching out to locals and tourist alike. SDX has been extremely helpful and thoughtful in assisting our community project through a difficult year"
