Why did you choose to be an artist/designer?
Always wanted to be a sculptor. I was a primary teacher for 16 years and basically spent the whole time making giant sculptures with children.
What medium do you work in?
I work in clay mostly but can't resist making things from natural materials as well.
What's your background, have you always been an artist/designer?
I used to be a primary school teacher in Granton for a long time. While I was teaching I took loads of courses and eventually started to sculpt full time.
How has your practice changed over time?
Definitely I learn every piece I do. Also doing raku is definitely something that you need to learn through experience.
What Does Your Art Mean to You? What Does Your Artwork Represent?
Most of my small gift art represents Scottish buildings and wildlife. I live in the lammermuir hills and see little but'n'ben cottages all around me. I even live in a little witches cottage
How and when did you started creating….?
I started as an artist full-time about 4 years ago. I had spent a year working on a design for a small house and finally while meditating cracked it and realised I needed to do it and raku. I then made a raku kiln and started spending all my time setting fire to stuff outside!
How would you describe your creations?
I would describe them as organic and elemental! with raku you never quite know what the final piece is going to turn out like and I love that
What inspires you?
I'm inspired by the human form, loves copes in a pregnant woman. Also as I have 4 children I absolutely love sculpting children. Also my witches soul loves sculpting anything magical
Where do you show / sell your art?
I sell my small gift art in lots of places. I am currently on commission to historic Scotland to provide them with wee hooses. my art has been in various galleries all over Scotland and a couple of Yorkshire too.
Do you think art can have an impact in the local community?
Art is part of being in a community. Community cannot exist without creativity.
Who are your biggest influences?
Funnily enough my biggest influences on my children as they are the most honest critics.
Which current art do you think is having an impact in the world right now?
I'm really impressed with the amount of feminist art that is being produced by amazing people. While the world becomes more right wing and misogynist female artists are really speaking out and making influential art.
What difference has working with SDX made to your business?
I love working with SDX. Basically you have the loveliest staff who are just so supportive and kind. They put up with my hazard way of being and make me feel really happy whenever I'm in. I want to bring them all home and feed them chicken soup and give them cuddles!
