Handmade from cobblestones that once lined Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, this sterling silver necklace carries a small piece of the city’s history. Thoughtful and full of story, it makes a unique gift for anyone who loves Edinburgh and the sense of place it holds.

Edinburgh’s world-famous Royal Mile runs from Edinburgh Castle down to Holyrood Palace. During recent pavement-widening works, the original cobblestones were lifted and relaid. A number of the remaining stones were carefully saved, then cut and polished into cabochons, which I have used to create a limited collection of jewellery.

This necklace features delicate silver flowers and leaves resting above a black cobblestone, all crafted from recycled sterling silver. The flowers have been gently darkened with a patina to bring out their detail and to contrast beautifully with the stone’s deep colour. The pendant hangs from an 18-inch chain and is finished with a handmade sterling silver toggle clasp, shaped like a tiny cobblestone.

Edinburgh’s cobblestones are formed from granite and basalt; this particular stone is basalt, with a rich, solid black tone.

The pendant measures approximately 39 × 23 mm, and the chain length is 18 inches. This necklace has been hallmarked at the Edinburgh Assay Office.
